Sound Moderators Petition

There is a petition to allow sound moderators also know as suppressors or silencers to be legally purchased and used in Canada.  For the most part I think this is a wonderful idea.  For hunters, sport shooting…. this just makes sense.  There are a few things I think we have to watch out for and that is if they are removed from being prohibited it could have hidden consequences.  One that comes to my mind first is ranges.  I think that if municipalities get complaints about a range even just one, they may slap a requirement for ALL shooting at the range to have a suppressor.  Now this would be ok in some instances such as near highly populated areas.  This may actual allow for more ranges to open as there would less distance needed between a range and housing….  But the drawback is that once a city passes laws that make it a requirement more and more will jump on the bandwagon and soon there will be very few places to shoot without a silencer.  I want the right to use one but also don’t want them pushed down my throat.   The other main issue is I don’t currently own any firearms that will accept them!  I would have to sell my house to buy a bunch of new guns and having firearms but being homeless does not “sound” good to me!  Kidding of course.

In the end I think its something we should strive for as they do protect our hearing and do have a purpose.  The biggest hurdle in parliament and to the public would be to educate them that a sound moderator is not like you see in the movies, you can’t shoot a gun with a suppressor on it and it will sound like opening a can of pop.  They are still loud just not unsafe loud.
